Bush lore

The Schools nature-based emphasis enhances learning and takes nothing away from the school’s academic standing. The Environmental emphasis does not comprise its standard of academic excellence rather it serves only add immense value to your child’s school experience with the addition of a unique category of learning known as bush lore.

Within the school’s unique location and the parametres of the national curriculum, the fundamental objective of SCS is to produce young people who have an “environmental conscience”. This objective permeates all facets of school life and directs the approach the school takes in educating its learners.

The Environmental emphasis in teaching and learning begins in the classroom where teachers, particularly but not exclusively, in the Pre-school and Preparatory School, use nature-based themes to teach the curriculum. These themes are then used to guide the bush lore programme.

A wide range of information about the natural environment, its intricate and interlinked systems and processes and the many human related pressures on it, are shared with the learners.

The objective of developing an environmental conscience in our learners permeates all facets of school life. From the naming of colour houses to the recognition of learner achievement; from the leadership structures to the events and activities engaged in by the school, everything is directed to a greater or lesser extent by this objective.

At SCS we believe that a deep love and respect for the natural environment, an environmental conscience, is born out of authentic knowledge of and real life contact with the natural environment. This happens in part through bush lore, but also through countless other opportunities that are provided by our unique location. within the natural environment.

  • Learning about every facet of our nature environment is part of the unique Southern Cross educational experience.
