A few months ago the Southern Cross Schools family was over the moon when Rebecca Behne (Grade 7) achieved silver and bronze medals at the Limpopo swimming championships. As a result of her success in the pool at the provincial championships, she was selected to swim for the Limpopo team in the northern section of the SA swimming championships.
“Rebecca is very committed to everything she does. Her school work is excellent, she has earned provincial colours on the mountain bike track and she clearly has developed great talent in the swimming pool,” said the Headmaster of Southern Cross Schools, Mr Ant de Boer.
Rebecca qualified to swim in the 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 50m breaststroke. The gala started on Friday 5 April and was held in the Hillcrest pool in Pretoria. Rebecca swam well in her first heat, the 100m freestyle and qualified for the final in the fastest time. She later went on to win the final in a time of 1 minute 13.75 seconds which is about 4 seconds faster than her own personal best time ever.
On Saturday 6 April she competed in the 100 breaststroke heats, once again qualifying for the final. Despite improving her own personal best time in this event she managed only a 9th place in a time of 1 minute 39.59 seconds.
On the last day of competition Rebecca once again qualified for the final, this time in the 50m breaststroke. She once again improved her own personal best which enabled her to achieve the silver medal in a time of 41.77 seconds.
“The highlight was having Cameron van der Burgh (Olympic gold medalist) hanging the medal around her neck, she was beaming,” said Jane Behne, Rebecca’s mom.
“Gold and silver at the SA Champs certainly is something to be extremely proud of, we are thrilled for her,” said Ant de Boer.
