On Saturday 25 May PEPPS College from Polokwane brought two busloads of learners to play a full set of fixtures against Sothern Cross College. Learners competed against each other in chess, public speaking, netball, hockey and soccer.
PEPPS won the chess outright by six matches to nil. This was to be expected as PEPPS competes in a chess league whereas the SCS players were literally playing in their first match of the year. It was, however, a good experience for our young chess team.
The public speaking competition was a lot more evenly matched with the junior competition going to Southern Cross and the senior event won by PEPPS.
On the netball courts the spoils were shared with Southern Cross winning the U15 match and PEPPS winning the U17 and Open matches.
On the soccer field PEPPS enjoyed two wins. The first was a narrow victory of 2-1 against the Southern Cross U15 boys who played theirbest match of the season. The 1st team boys were very competitive in the first half but let the game get away from them in the second half. They took a solid beating by the end of the match, losing 8-2.
Hockey definitely enjoyed the most success on the day, starting with the first team boys who played by far their best match of the season to hold a very strong PEPPS team to a 1-1 draw. This was followed by the U16 girls who dominated the match and won comfortably by 3-1. The 1st team girls also played excellently to record a 4-1 victory in a match in which they never looked to be in any trouble at all.
It is very pleasing to see how well our relatively small College is managing to compete against much bigger schools. This really speaks to the outstanding attitude of our learners and their commitment to the task at hand.
